Third world country.

A week ago, while booking our hotel in London, I realized I had to renew my passport before I go. No big deal. I’ve done it before.

Called the Consulate and of course, they just decided that I can’t renew my passport while living in a foreign country. Are you fucking kidding me? Even though I haven’t lived there in over 10 years. Even though I’ve done it by mail at least 3 times before.

People immigrate to other countries, you know?

So apparently, I have to fly to the motherland for a day so I can stand in a giant line and get a new passport because they are too backwards to set up a normal, working website so I can renew my passport while living in another country. They are too backwards to offer what every other Central American country does - the ability to vote, renew your passport and even pay taxes while abroad.

I’m really trying to hold off on this American citizenship thing for as long as I can. I really don’t want to become one (say what you will, I don’t want it). I rather move somewhere else first. But man, the motherland is making it difficult.

“If we have goals and dreams and we want to do our best, and if we love people and we don’t want to hurt them or lose them, we should feel pain when things go wrong. The point isn’t to live without any regrets, the point is to not hate ourselves for having them… We need to learn to love the flawed, imperfect things that we create, and to forgive ourselves for creating them. Regret doesn’t remind us that we did badly — it reminds us that we know we can do better.” — Kathryn Schulz via her TED talk: Don’t Regret Regret
